High School Math Courses
High School Math
WiloStar3D has adopted Teaching Textbooks as our main math curriculum. After exhaustive field testing during previous school years and piloting different programs— the results are in. Teaching Textbooks is our choice! Teaching Textbooks is an easy-to-use video based learning system designed to help a wide range of students gain proficiency in math. Teaching Textbooks offers students hundreds of video-based lessons spanning five skill levels ranging from grades 1.5 to college entry. Teaching Textbook lessons challenge beginning students all the way to advanced learners!
Please note that the Teaching Textbooks fee is NOT INCLUDED in your annual tuition and this is an extra fee.
Students at the high school level are required to take a total of 4 math credits. The type of math course they take to fulfill graduation requirements is dependent on college goals. Please read our recommendations on the graduation and college info page.
High school students take a FULL YEAR math over one semester in a block scheduling format.
Algebra 1
Algebra 1
Credits: 1
Algebra 1 is made up of five instructional components: Introduction of the New Increment, Examples with Complete Solutions, Practice of the Increment, Daily Problem Sets, and Cumulative Tests. Algebra 1 covers topics typically treated in a first-year algebra course.
Topics Covered Include:
- arithmetic and evaluation of expressions involving signed numbers, exponents, and roots
- properties of real numbers
- absolute value
- equations and inequalities involving absolute value
- scientific notation
- unit conversions
- solution of equations in one unknown
- solution of simultaneous equations the algebra of polynomials and rational expressions
- word problems requiring algebra for the solution (such as uniform motion and coin problems)
- graphical solution of simultaneous equations
- graphs of a variety of functions: linear, quadratic, cubic, square root, absolute value, etc.
- translations and reflections of graphs
- factoring
- Pythagorean theorem
- algebraic proofs
- functional notation and functions
- solution of quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, and quadratic formula
- direct and inverse variation
- exponential growth
- computation of the perimeter and area of two-dimensional regions
- computation of the surface area and volume of a wide variety of geometric solids
- statistics
- probability
Geometry
Geometry
Credits: 1
Prerequisite Algebra 1
This course will emphasize the mastery of geometric and logical concepts in connection with other fields.
Topics covered will include:
- inductive and deductive reasoning
- geometric construction
- properties of lines and angles
- properties of two-and three-dimensional shapes
- congruence and similarity, and applications of geometry to art and other fields.
The course will require daily completion on online Aleks math lessons with an emphasis on the student’s discovery of concepts. Students will also be expected to work online with the instructor and members of a study group. This course lays the foundation for the deductive skills required in all higher-level math courses. All students are expected to utilize a Texas Instruments graphing calculator. For mathematically-inclined students, this course may be taken concurrently with Algebra 2.
Algebra 2
Algebra 2
Credits: 1
Algebra 2 is made up of five instructional components:
- Introduction of the New Increment
- Examples with Complete Solutions
- Practice of the Increment
- Daily Problem Sets
- Cumulative Tests
Algebra 2 not only treats topics that are traditionally covered in second-year algebra, but also covers a considerable amount of geometry. Time is spent developing geometric concepts and writing proof outlines.
Students completing Algebra 2 Will have studied the equivalent of one semester of informal geometry. Applications to other subjects such as physics and chemistry, as well as real-world problems, are covered, including gas laws, force vectors, chemical mixtures, and percent markups. Set theory, probability and statistics, and other topics are also included.
- Algebra 2 includes such topics as:
- Graphical solution of simultaneous
- Equations scientific notation
- Radicals
- Roots of quadratic equations including complex roots
- Properties of real numbers
- Factoring
- Inequalities and systems of inequalities
- Logarithms and antilogarithms
- Conic sections
- Exponential equations
- Basic trigonometric functions
- Algebra of polynomials
- Vectors in polar and rectangular form
- Algebraic word problems
Trigonometry
Trigonometry
Credits: 1
Learning the processes to solve practical problems employing trigonometric functions is the focus of the first half of this course. Topics will include right and oblique triangle trigonometry, verifying identities, multiple-angle formulas, and vectors. The algebra part of the course will review algebra basics and lead to studies in linear through polynomial functions, systems, matrices, and probability. Students are responsible for providing their own calculators for this class or renting one from the school. All instruction will be provided on TI 83/84 calculators.
High School Math Program
WiloStar3D Academy students use the Teaching Textbooks math program. We offer math as either a self-directed option or teacher guided option. The teacher guided option is an add on to your annual tuition. To read more about how Teaching Textbooks is set up under the self-directed option download the PDF below.
Reading and Writing Workshop
Students participate in Avatar Storytellers program where they write their own short stories, tall tales, mysteries and other genres of writing.
Interactive Learning
WiloStar’s online virtual school program is designed to give students a healthy online learning environment where they can interact with their peers and teachers during the school day. Students have live class meetings and online study hall requirements.
Learning Accommodations
WiloStar believes in treating each student as an individual and respecting their unique needs. We are one of the very few virtual schools that make learning accommodations for students! Incoming students are given appropriate placement screening and an ILP is created.
Problem Solvers
WiloStar staff and faculty believes there is no problem that can’t be solved. The key here is communication. If a parent sees something is not working for the student there at home, they let us know and we moblize to find ways to adapt the learning and find solutions that will help the student.
Stellar Support
The WiloStar Student Support team is at the ready to help with extra tutoring, counseling and tech support. For struggling students, we offer several strategies to help get back on track. For techincal issues, we have a skilled and dedicated team ready to help solve your issues.
